The accounts and permissions you need and things you should be aware of.

The BIOS to UEFI feature supports Dell, HP and Lenovo desktop and laptop systems. The reference section has a detailed list of all supported models.

Accounts needed to install BIOS to UEFI

To install BIOS to UEFI, you will need:

  • Installer account – must be a domain account with local admin rights

Always run the installer from an elevated command-prompt. On occasions, even when logged in as a local administrator you may encounter issues if the installer is launched by simply double-clicking the 1EBiosToUefi.MSI (it may fail to run, or when installing on a remote SMS Provider or Console, you may get an error message saying the installer must be run on a machine which has the CM Site, SMS Provider or Console installed).

WinPE image and scratch space requirements

Prior to CM CB 1610, it was not possible to restart the PC in a Task Sequence that started in BIOS mode with an MBR disk after applying the conversion to UEFI with a GPT disk. To work around this particular limitation, 1E provided the 1E BIOS to UEFI Task Sequence step that staged the boot image to a RAM disk, then provisioned it onto the hard disk after it had been repartioned to GPT. This had some limitations in itself (for example the Windows PE scratch space had to accommodate the boot image but is restricted to 512MB). This approach is no longer required in Configuration Manager Current Branch. The 1E BIOS to UEFI step is no longer required and there are no specific requirements for Windows PE scratch space.
