Support on Lenovo systems

The 1E BIOS to UEFI OEM Task Sequence uses the Lenovo BIOS WMI interface to make firmware changes on Lenovo systems. The Lenovo BIOS WMI interface is implemented within the firmware so no additional tools are required - configuration is achieved using WMI directly. The implementation of this interface differs on laptop (ThinkPad) and desktop (ThinkCentre) systems.

The Lenovo BIOS WMI interface currently only supports enabling UEFI with Secure Boot. Enabling UEFI without Secure Boot or with the Compatibility Support Module(CSM) is not supported.

Lenovo ThinkPad systems

According to Lenovo BIOS Setup using Windows Management Instrumentation Deployment Guide - ThinkPad, BIOS setup through WMI is supported on the following ThinkPad products

  • ThinkPad L430, L530, L440, L540, L450, L460, L560
  • ThinkPad T430, T430s, T430u, T530, T440, T440p, T440s, T540p, T450, T450s, T550, W550s, T460, T460p, T460s, T560
  • ThinkPad X1 Carbon (all generations), X1 Yoga, X230, X230 Tablet, X240, X240s, X250, X260
  • ThinkPad W530, W540, W541
  • ThinkPad P50, P50s, P70, P40 Yoga
  • ThinkPad Yoga 11e
  • ThinkPad 11e, 13
  • ThinkPad Helix (machine types: 20CG, 20CH)
  • ThinkPad 10 (all generations), ThinkPad X1 Tablet
  • ThinkPad Yoga 260, Yoga 460

Lenovo ThinkCentre systems

Until recently, the settings to manage UEFI configuration were not implemented in the Lenovo BIOS WMI interface on ThinkCentre systems. In August 2016 Lenovo began releasing firmware update (FWKT54A) for some of the ThinkCentre M700/M800/M900 models and have subsequently issued BIOS revisions for other models. Any Lenovo desktop system running BIOS older than August 2016 will NOT support management of UEFI configuration. The detailed lists below indicate models we have specifically tested and those that, while not specifically tested we expect to work as they have the same BIOS as the ones that have been tested successfully.

While support for the Lenovo BIOS WMI interface is a pre-requisite for the 1E BIOS to UEFI feature on Lenovo systems, and systems that support the Lenovo BIOS WMI interface are expected to behave in the same way, 1E cannot guarantee that the 1E feature will work as expected on every Lenovo device that supports the Lenovo BIOS WMI interface. The sections below detail specific models the 1E feature has been validated on and those that are known as unsupported.

Confirmed supported Lenovo systems

The 1E BIOS to UEFI OEM Task Sequence step has been validated on the following Lenovo systems. Note that Lenovo do not support UEFI Native without Secure Boot or UEFI Hybrid with CSM options.

The following Lenovo systems are known to have issues or do not support UEFI configuration using the Lenovo BIOS WMI interface and therefore cannot be supported by the 1E BIOS to UEFI feature:

  • Lenovo Thinkpad T460 (appears to change UEFI but does not actually make the change and does not enable Secure Boot)
  • ThinkPad S1 Yoga (12)
  • ThinkPad Twist
  • ThinkPad T420/T520/W520 ( Does not support SecureBoot )
  • ThinkCentre M81 / M91 ( Does not support SecureBoot )
