Device Locations
Within Tachyon we can classify our devices into locations within an organization. We can then base our coverage of instructions on this for use in targeting.
Setting Location
In this exercise we will set the Location of our devices, in a production environment you may need to consider how to divide up your devices
- Return to the Settings Application and navigate to Instructions – Instruction Sets. In the Instruction set pane, click the All instructions
- Type in Location in the Search field. Search for this
- From what you have already learned create an instruction set containing the instructions related to Location
- Return to Explorer - Home, and in the I want to know type Location
- Select Get the location of my devices, and click Ask this question
- When the results return observe that the location are currently set to Cities, we are going to change this
- Return to Explorer - Home, and in the I want to know type Location
- Select Set the location of my devices to instruction
- Set the Locations of Each management group to:
Lab Servers - Datacenter
All Win 7 Devices - New York - OfficeAll Win 10 Devices - Tokyo - Office
- Click Perform this action
- Input Passw0rd for the password
- Launch LiveMail and click Send/Receive to update the inbox
- Retrieve the authentication code from the latest email and input it into the console
- Launch LiveMail and click Send/Receive to update the inbox
- Open the latest email with subject Tachyon action X requires approval
- Click on the Go to approval page link
- Click on the approval request. Review the details of the action request. Note that all 7 clients are targeted
- Input a comment if you wish. Check the I understand the impact of this action and approve this request box. Click Approve
- Check the inbox in LiveMail. An email confirming the instruction was approved will be present with a current timestamp
- Return to the Explorer Application. It should be on the responses page for our instruction
- Once all are set rerun the Get the location of my devices question
- When the results return observe that the location is correctly set for each group
Viewing the Location
Now that we have set the Location of our devices , we will view the Location of our devices
- Navigate to the Devices - Table screen of the Explorer Application
- On the top bar find the Location field and enter - individually Datacenter, Tokyo - Office and New York - Office
- Notice how the data displayed in the table changes, and there is no Location field on the table but the devices change as the selection changes
Asking a Question Using our Coverage Tag
Now that we have set the criticality of our devices , we will ask another question. We will use Criticality for our coverage.
- Navigate to the Home screen of the Explorer Application
- In the I want to know field type in Services and choose What Services are Running?
- Next to Parameters click Edit
- Expand Coverage – Location
- Then choose Contains and enter DataCenter
- Click Set
- Click Ask this Question
- Notice that we only have responses from our 2 Windows Servers
Lab Summary
In this lab, we worked with Tachyon to set the Location for each device, We then looked at how to view the location and also to use it as a parameter in an instruction
